Cue Toni Braxton for just a second because… we can finally breathe again.
Okay, maybe not fully. Because let’s be real, running a foundation does not exactly come with a pause button, a soft landing, or a “congratulations, now everything is easy” email.
But this moment? This moment deserves a deep breath.
The R.K. Foundation is officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
And those words may look simple on paper, but getting here was anything but simple.
It’s a crazy thing, right?
We move through life almost on autopilot. Our breath stays steady, not because we are thinking about it, but because our bodies know what to do. Even when life is heavy. Even when we are tired. Even when we are just trying to make it through the day.
And this year? Life was, doing its thing.
After being denied and rejected for grants and sponsorships, one of the biggest things on my mind was how badly we needed our exemption. We needed that official recognition for the door to open.
Then, thanks to a gracious donation, I was finally able to apply. And I was excited. Truly excited. Then slowly but surely, life hit me head-on like a freight train running on the wrong track with no brakes. Life decided it was going to do what it wanted to do, and somewhere in the middle of trying to survive everything personally, I completely forgot about the application I submitted. Everything disappeared from my view.
I had been so swallowed up in the shadows of my own life that I did not have the motivation to do much of anything. These past few weeks have honestly been a blur.
Then my mom, my greatest motivator and pusher, called me and gave me the news:
The R.K. Foundation had officially been recognized as a 501(c)(3).
And the first thing I thought was, “Wow… how did you see this before me?”
My excitement did not hit right away.
And that is when I knew something had to give.
Because when the very thing you prayed for finally arrives, and you are too exhausted to feel it, that is not failure. That is a sign that you have been holding your breath for too long.
So, this moment is more than an approval.
It is a reminder to breathe again.
This did not happen in a quiet season of my life. This did not happen when life was perfectly lined up. This did not happen while everything around me was peaceful, predictable, and easy to manage.
It happened in the middle of life still life-ing.
In the middle of personal battles. In the middle of doubt. In the middle of trying to build something meaningful while also trying to keep myself together. In the middle of days when I questioned if I had enough strength, enough support, enough time, enough money, or enough of myself to keep going.
But purpose is funny like that.
It does not always wait for the perfect moment. Sometimes it shows up while you are tired, overwhelmed, unsure, and still healing, then has the nerve to whisper, “Keep going.”
So, I did.
And now, here we are.
Official.
The R.K. Foundation was created because too many young people are walking through life unseen, unheard, unsupported, and underestimated. Too many are carrying things they do not have language for yet. Too many are being told who they are before they ever get the space to discover it for themselves.
That is why this work matters.
Our mission is to create meaningful youth programs, safe spaces, creative experiences, mentorship opportunities, and legacy-building initiatives that help young people feel seen, supported, loved, challenged, and reminded that they are more than enough.
Becoming a 501(c)(3) allows us to move forward with greater structure, credibility, and opportunity. It helps open doors for grants, partnerships, donations, sponsorships, and community support that will directly help us launch and grow the programs our youth deserve.
But more than anything, this approval is confirmation.
Confirmation that the vision is real. Confirmation that the work is needed. Confirmation that even when the road is heavy, the calling is still worth carrying.
To everyone who has encouraged me, prayed for me, believed in the vision, shared a kind word, donated, listened, showed up, or simply reminded me not to quit, thank you.
Seriously.
Because some days, the vision was the only thing standing. And even then, it stood.
This is not the finish line. This is the foundation beneath the foundation.
Now the real work begins.
The programs, partnerships, youth experiences, community impact, the legacy.
We are building something that will outlive us, and this is one more brick placed with love, faith, pressure, tears, and purpose.
The R.K. Foundation is officially a 501(c)(3).
We can breathe again.
Now let’s build.
